Tessalation Row uses the Fibonacci series to generate tunings, rhythms, and forms. All pitches are played on open strings (tuned to 1/1, 3/2, 5/3, 8/5) or overtones of these open strings. There are sections where the players may vary the overtone melodies and timbres while adhering to base pitches, rhythms and timings, allowing internal detail to range widely with each performance while maintaining the exact form and overall sonic identity of the piece. Tessalation Row premiered in 1986 at NY’s Miller Theatre, performed by the Soldier String Quartet. |
