This work explores a forced isolation of the first violin from the rest of the ensemble. The first violin initiates the melody while the remaining trio interrupts with short interjectional phrases and sustained drones. The composition works toward the integration of the first violin with its other members, exploring the sonic possibilities inherent in the opening melody. The union of the four members disintegrates as the piece comes to an end, leaving the first violin in isolation once again. This piece was commissioned by Radio-Canada Québec and is dedicated in admiration and friendship to the Bozzini Quartet and Laurent Major. |
