Notice (fr) : Six personnes se sont réunies un soir à mon appartement, chacune ayant en main un microphone et un magnétophone. Cette rencontre a donné lieu à un récit corporel communiqué par la mastication de la pensée et de la subjecti-vité. Le sentiment de perte qui accompagne la désincarnation de la voix enre-gistrée devient une métaphore pour la perte en général. Il nous reste un véhicule pour la reconstruction du sens et de l’état d’objet: le résidu que représente le son enregistré.

Synopsis

Le texte de Failed Suicide (Suicide raté) traite des notions de disparition et de sens (nous devons dire quelque chose dont nous pouvons nous rappeler). Une déclaration au sujet d’un suicide suscite un questionnement à propos d’une expérience aux confins de la mort. Une question phénoménologique survient sur la façon dont nous distinguons un chien d’un chat. La réponse à cette question est fournie par un chaton et un humain. Vers la fin, une conversation porte sur la difficulté de parler. L’un des participants conclut par cette affirmation: «on doit décider si c’est le matin ou le soir; ou si on a bien dormi; ou bien mangé, ou mal, ou trop… ou pas assez».
Notice (en) : One evening six people gathered at my apartment, each with microphone and tape recorder in hand. What emerged is a corporeal tale conveyed through the mastication of thought and subjectivity. The sense of loss that accompanies the disembodiment of the recorded voice becomes a metaphor for loss in general. We are left with a vehicle for the reconstruction of meaning and object-hood: the residue that is recorded sound.

Synopsis

The text of Failed Suicide concerns itself with notions of disappearance and meaning (we have to say something we can remember). A statement about a suicide prompts a question about near death experience. A phenomenological question is raised about how we know the difference between a dog and a cat. The answer to this question is provided by both a kitten and a human. Towards the end, a conversation develops on a difficulty in speaking. One of the speakers concludes with the following statement: “you have to decide if it’s in the morning or at night; or if you slept good; or ate good, or bad, or too much… or not enough.”
Autres informations (fr) : Failed Suicide a été réalisée au studio privé de l’artiste, et construite à l’aide d’une lame de rasoir et d’une bande magnétique analogique 1/4". L’œuvre a été créée le 14 mars 1991 lors de l’événement Radio Possibilities à la Forest City Gallery, et radiodiffusée simultanément au poste CHRW FM Radio Western à London (Ontario). Autres informations (en) : Failed Suicide was produced at the artist’s home recording studio and was constructed via razor blade and analog 1/4" magnetic tape. It was premiered on March 14th, 1991 during Radio Possibilities at the Forest City Gallery and simultaneously broadcast on CHRW FM Radio Western in London (Ontario).
