Écouter raconter une histoire est une expérience commune à tous. C’est là que j’ai puisé l’idée de Stories Told (Histoires racontées) (Robin Dawes, texte) qui veut explorer l’acte de raconter. Mais au lieu d’être une histoire particulière, le texte est écrit dans un pseudo-langage créé par ordinateur. Il est conçu pour donner l’impression d’une langue réelle, mais il prend son importance dans Stories Told en tant que parole a-signifiante. Tous les auditeurs, sans égard à leur langue ou à leur culture, partagent l’expérience d’écouter une histoire racontée dans une langue étrangère. Le texte a été produit par un logiciel programmé par Robin Dawes. Son logiciel utilise une analyse statistique du dictionnaire de la langue anglaise Oxford pour produire de nouveaux mots qui ont le même attribut de distribution que les combinaisons de lettres de l’anglais. Ces mots ont été regroupés en classes phonétiques pour créer quatre ‘dialectes’ distincts. |

Stories Told (Robin Dawes, text) results from an interest in the common experience of listening to storytelling. In an attempt to explore the act of story telling, rather than any one particular story, the text is made up of a computer-generated pseudo-language. It is designed to sound like an intelligible language, but is important to Stories Told as speech that no one can understand. All listeners, regardless of linguistic or cultural background, share the experience of listening to a story told in a foreign tongue. The text was generated by a program written by Robin Dawes. His software uses a statistical analysis of the Oxford English Dictionary to produce new words which exhibit the same distribution of letter combinations as English. These words have been grouped into specific phoneme classes to create four distinct ‘dialects.’ |

Stories Told est une commande de Catherine Lewis réalisée avec l’aide du Conseil des arts du Canada ({acro:cac}). Elle a été créée par Catherine Lewis le 13 novembre 1989 durant les Journées électroacoustiques >convergence< de la Communauté électroacoustique canadienne ({acro:cecf}) au Banff Centre for the Arts (Alberta, Canada). Le présent enregistrement a été réalisé au studio audionumérique Luscar du Banff Centre for the Arts en juillet 1990. |

It was premiered by Catherine Lewis on November 13, 1989, during the {acro:cec} Electroacoustic Days, >convergence< at The Banff Centre for the Arts (Alberta, Canada). The present recording was realized at the Luscar Studio of The Banff Centre for the Arts in July 1990. |
