La Folia is a series of variations on the bass line that was popular in the Renaissance and early Baroque, and which was widely used by composers in the European tradition up to the start of the 20th century. This work pays homage to the ongoing cultural vitality of the folia by bringing it into the 21st century, combining the bass line with contemporary harmonies and rhythms, and applying rhythmic processes to it as the variations unfold. The harpsichord is the ideal instrument for this piece. Not only were numerous variations on the folia written for it over the ages, it also is extremely well-suited to the performance of complex counterpoint, rhythms and harmonies. |
