Travelling Heavenward est le premier de quatre collages qui constituent Music for Virtual Orchestra, pièce pour bande produite au Danish Institute for Electroacoustic Music (DIEM) en 1995. Avec Music for Two Pianos, celle-ci a été commandée par le Boxiganga Performance Theater pour la représentation multimédia Kinematograf, dont la première a eu lieu à Aarhus en novembre 1995. Le spectacle, qui était conçu et produit par Kjell Yngve Petersen, comprenait la projection d’un film en trois dimensions et impliquait des interprètes en direct. En relation avec les séries de concerts Planetarium du DIEM, Michael Nyvang et Kjell Yngve Petersen ont été chargés de créer une nouvelle œuvre multimédia pour montage audio-visuel: le résultat, Music for Virtual Orchestra, est constitué des quatre collages de Kinematograf dans une version quatre canaux. Parallèlement à l’idée de la projection en trois dimensions utilisée dans la représentation de Kinematograf, plusieurs techniques de spatialisation ont été utilisées pour placer les sons dans des ‘pièces virtuelles’ et créer l’illusion du mouvement à l’intérieur de celles-ci. |

Travelling Heavenward is the first of four collages that make up the work Music for Virtual Orchestra, a work for tape produced at DIEM in 1995. Together with Music for Two Pianos the work was commissioned by the Boxiganga Performance Theater for the multimedia performance Kinematograf, which was premiered in Aarhus in November 1995. The performance, which was conceived and produced by Kjell Yngve Petersen, involved three-dimensional film projection as well as live performers. In connection with DIEM’s Planetarium Concert Series, Michael Nyvang and Kjell Yngve Petersen were commissioned to create a new multimedia work for tape and slide projection. The result was Music for Virtual Orchestra, which consists of the original four collages from Kinematograf in a four-channel version. Parallel to the idea of three-dimensional film projection used in the performance of Kinematograf, various spatialization techniques were used to place the sounds in “virtual rooms” and create the illusion of movement within these rooms. |
