“There are several of these chatter pieces, all part of an instantly recognizable generic family of machine-like human voices twittering away in pulsing harmonies; this one is my favourite. Near and implied spoken-language in a musical format has continued to fascinate me ever since i worked on the various Burrows. I seem to have in recent years more often, when language is present at all, gone beyond my native english, as in the trilingual Un Paysage / Eine Landschaft / A Landscape (1996), the quadralingual Brazilianaires (1996) and the bilingual Homonymy, for ten musicians and cinema (1998) which premiered here in Montreal. I delight in the sound of foreign languages, which i cannot comprehend in the hearing, even if i’ve been extensively involved in their translation. And so idle_chatter is yet another, particularly bouyant, foreign language.” — Jon Oswald |
