The ensemble of the string quartet consists of instruments that are similar to each other in different ways. Two of them are identical (even if no two violins, or violinists, ever sound the same); out of a viola’s four strings, three are the same as on a violin but of a very different timbre; the cello, in turn, is tuned like the viola, only an octave lower — the octave representing a particular form of unison, or identity. In twin/double, these degrees of similarity are highlighted by pairs of instruments sharing the same material. The very first idea for this piece dates back to 2002, to an excellent recital by the Bozzini Quartet, so I am very pleased that they are to give its first performance. |
