Au cœur de la filature Quarry Bank Mill à Styal, au sud de Manchester (RU), tourne une grande roue à aubes en fer. Au 19e siècle, celle-ci actionnait les machines à textile qui se trouvent encore dans les bâtiments. La roue fait tourner un grand arbre d’entraînement qui produit un son qui résonne dans toute la filature, à travers une riche collection d’autres sonorités. Aujourd’hui, les métiers à tisser et autres machines de métal ou de bois (reliques de la Révolution industrielle) sont actionnés par l’eau, la vapeur ou l’électricité. La filature abrite un univers sonore fort en volume, en vibrations, en résonance, en rythme, en intensité et en énergie: eau et vapeur, roues et engrenages, commutateurs, courroies, poulies et bielles, tuyaux à vapeur, machines qui gémissent, fils et tissus délicats. Cet ensemble produit une musique unique en son genre qui habite la filature, la machinerie, les planchers et l’air ambiant, musique qui se retrouve en grande partie dans Styal. Néanmoins, Quarry Bank Mill n’est que le point de départ de l’œuvre. À partir de la matière sonore que j’ai trouvée et empruntée à la filature (avec quelques bruits de bobines de fil et de tissus déchirés captés en studio), j’ai remodelé et recréé un univers sonore, une musique et un lieu n’existant que dans mon imagination. |

At the heart of the Quarry Bank Mill at Styal, south of Manchester (UK), turns a great iron waterwheel, the original driving force for the 19th century textile machines still residing within the buildings there. The wheel turns a large and resonant drive shaft, the sound of which can be heard rattling throughout the Mill, amidst a rich collection of other sounds. Various combinations of water power, steam, and electric engines now interact to drive the power looms and other metal and wooden machinery — remnants from the Industrial Revolution. Inhabiting the mill is a sound world of great volume, vibration, resonance, rhythm, intensity and energy, water and steam, cogs and wheels, switches, belts, pulleys and spindles, steam pipes, groaning and straining machines, delicate threads and textiles. All of this gives rise to a very unique music that inhabits the Mill, the machinery, the floorboards, and the air, and much of it finds its way into Styal. Quarry Bank Mill is, however, only a starting point for this work. Taking the sounds I have found and borrowed from the mill (with some additional sounds of spools of thread and tearing textiles recorded in the studio), I re-shape and re-create a sound world, music, and place of my own imagining. |

Styal a été réalisée en 2004 aux Electroacoustic Music Studios de The University of Manchester (RU) et a été créée le 15 octobre 2004, au Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall du Martin Harris Centre de The University of Manchester (Angleterre, RU), dans le cadre de la série de concerts {acro:mantis} (Manchester Theatre in Sound). Merci au National Trust, ainsi qu’au personnel et aux bénévoles de Quarry Bank Mill et de Styal Estate. Styal a obtenu le premier prix au 6e Concurso Internacional de Música Eletroacústica de São Paulo ({acro:cimesp} Brésil, 2005), en plus d’être sélectionnée par le 32e Concours international de musique électroacoustique et d’art sonore de Bourges (France, 2005), dans la catégorie Trivium. |

Styal was realized in 2004 at the Electroacoustic Music Studios of The University of Manchester (UK) and premiered on October 15, 2004 during the {acro:mantis} (Manchester Theatre in Sound) concert series in the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall of the Martin Harris Centre of The University of Manchester (England, UK). Thanks to the National Trust and the staff and volunteers at the Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate. Styal was awarded First Prize at the 6th Concurso Internacional de Música Eletroacústica de São Paulo ({acro:cimesp} ’05, Brazil) and was selected in the Trivium Category of the 32nd Bourges International Electroacoustic Music and Sonic Art Competition (France, 2005). |
