Michal Novotny (born in 1984) is a composer and conductor living in Boston, where he is pursuing a Master’s of Music in Composition at BU’s College of Fine Arts. Growing up in Europe and Lebanon, he was exposed to a wide range of musical styles, from Middle Eastern folklore to Contemporary Classical music composers, and for many years studied Jazz Bass. Since focusing his attention on composition in 2006, he has collaborated with ensembles such as the McGill Wind Symphony Orchestra, The Cantata Singers of Ottawa, Capital BrassWork, the Contemporary Music Ensemble of McGill, LaCeilagh Chamber Singers, Quatuor Bozzini, Array Music and others, as well as conductors such as Alain Cazes, Michael Zaugg and Chris Hossfeld. Novotny has also worked as a conductor with the New Earth Voices and the Savoy Society of McGill University, where he recently completed a Bachelor of Music in Honours Composition. He is still active on the Montréal scene, where he is scheduled to conduct concerts of new music by Montréal based composers, and has been appointed Music Director for a new opera project by composer Ralph Denzer at Concordia University with Canadian renowned director Keith Turnbull. |
