Growing up in Europe and Lebanon, he was exposed to a wide range of musical styles, from Middle Eastern folklore to Contemporary Classical music composers, and for many years studied Jazz Bass. Novotny has also worked as a conductor with the New Earth Voices and the Savoy Society of McGill University, where he recently completed a Bachelor of Music in Honours Composition. He is still active on the Montréal scene, where he is scheduled to conduct concerts of new music by Montréal based composers, and has been appointed Music Director for a new opera project by composer Ralph Denzer at Concordia University with Canadian renowned director Keith Turnbull.
